- If an object is too heavy for you to lift alone, don’t attempt to do so. Test the object’s weight before lifting. If it’s too much to handle on your own, have somebody assist you before you proceed.
- Do not use your back to lift. Instead, use your legs. Do not stoop over. Keep your back straight and head up, and be sure to maintain proper posture at all times.
- Do not make any sudden movements, as this can cause the object’s weight to shift. If you need to change your lifting position, do so in a slow and precise manner.
- Don’t twist your waist while carrying a heavy object. Always line your shoulders with your hips. If you have to turn, use your entire body and not just your back.
- Do plan what you should do before you lift. Mapping out where you need to go and when to take a break can reduce the time necessary to lift the object. Clear your path of any obstruction that can hamper you from performing the lift efficiently.
- Do bend at the knees when you lift. Keep your back straight, until you can get a good grip of the object from underneath.
- Do keep the object as close to your body as possible. This way, you put much of the weight of the object on your arms and not your back. And make sure to keep your back straight.
- Do take only small steps when you start to move. Move with surety and certainty.
